I feel so blessed to count myself in the circle of people who knew and loved Ted, The Chief, in Garmisch.
I also feel extremely blessed that I was able to 'stop in' for a visit a year ago last April, when my husband and I spent a too-short week in Florida. When we got to the house and saw him and got that "Sue I thought youse would never make it here' greeting, it was as though no time had passed. We talked and laughed for a couple of hours and got a chance to exchange stories and gossip, and I got to hear his laugh, just one more time.
Everyone who knew The Chief loved and treasured him as a friend and as the best boss ever and something of a 'dad away from home', whether we were lucky enough to work for him (as I was) or not. He was always there to make you laugh when you weren't quite sure you felt like laughing, and he was pretty good at keeping tabs on who was doing what and with whom. I say all of this with a big grin on my face and a tear in my eye.
The world is a better place because Ted was in it and touched the hearts of so many people, in so many ways.
What a guy.
With love and gratitude,
Sue Mayer
Garmisch 75-87
ps.... I have a few photos from Ted's 60th birthday party at the campground (remember he would NOT eat any of the cakes we baked, ever....) and I'll see if I can post them here. I really wish I had one of him leaving the party, riding off on his brand-new bike, maybe some of you remember that.... it was a classic moment. What a guy.

So that you know, the visit frm everyone on his 80th birthday was truly one of the happiest days of my father's life. Every time I was able to go and visit him, he always talked about how overwhelmed he was when he opened the door and saw everyone there!! There is aboslutely nothing that could have meant more to him than the time and effort put forth for that visit!!

I received this mail from the USA this morning , after just awaking "Was reviewing my father's (Ted's) email and after filtering out all of the junk, wanted to respond to those that appeared to be legitimate and from individuals with whom my father had been corresponding. After a long fight with his illness, my father passed away early Saturday morning. He died quietly and was not in any distress. His wishes were that there be no service or memorial and of course those wishes will be honored."
He was a lovely man. I remember him fondly. Pete Day George A. Kastanes
