Joe It seems there is not a week goes by that I dont go back to Chiemsee. Un fortuneately not physically. I spent the summer of 81 there as a lifeguard.Many things trigger a memory of that summer. When the wind picks up I think of running to grab a windsurfer, Sometimes just a song, or when I get a Schieder Weiss ( there is a place here in St Louis to get it ) out of the fridge and sit on the deck,if I close my eyes its like I was there, only I am 25 years older and 30 pounds heavier.I remember so many names and faces from that time, only wish we could have kept up with each other.Atrip to the island would be a must and I would probably stay in Bernau. Still think of the great restaurants there.Maybe late September would be the ideal time to go and make a trip to the Octoberfest. I could ramble on forever, but should get back to work.

Hi there & Happy New Year.  Don't know if the rest of the U.S. has “BEVMO” stores (beverages and more) or if it is just a California thing, but you can't find complete selection of familiar Bavarian beers there.  Absolute heaven!

  You can get SchniederWeiss at Lucas Liquor on Manchester and Clarkson. It is a few bucks a bottle but worth every penny. I will be making a run there this week to stock up on some holiday provisions.

Allen Durow here (Chiemsee 93-00). What a great new discovery (this site). I still have dreams that I'm working in Chiemsee. Last visit was after the close but during the shut-down. Stayed in the Farmhaus (accross from the boat house) with the last of the last (Formby, Franz, and Barney showed up from Iraq). Can't wait to go back as sad as it is that it's gone.

Will post some stories in the coming days. Prost!

Just a quick and perhaps unrelated update on Chiemsee. I was there in late November,2005 and again in mid March of this year. The hotel is, as you know, walled off with fencing on both sides of the Autobahn. No entrance and no admittance.

In November it was snowing and a bit chilly. All of the familiar towns, Prien, Bernau, Felden were heavily developed over the years from when I was living in the Hotel (1968-1970).......the old roads we were familiar with have been rerouted a bit around the main Hotel; the Park Hotel, the repair garages, the gas station,etc. are all fenced shut. The Bauernhaus, which stood in front of the boat house, is still outside the wire (in my day, many of the American workers lived there and of course lots of memories from that era).

In March, on my return visit, a visit which included my two grown daughters seeing where their mother and I met for the first time after hearing of the adventures over the years, Chiemsee was completely frozen for the first time in over one hundred years!!! In fact, all of the locals that I could get to talk to me stated that this was the coldest winter in 150 years; the chill froze all Bavarian and Tirolian lakes solid....I visited three and indeed all were blocks of ice.

I have many pictures of the hotel and surrounding area both from recent times as well as from the previous times but dont know if anyone wants to look or need to be posted........I will await advise should anyone answer this.

Joe.. my husband and I were just there in May.  I was very happy to play tourist and show him all my favorite places -- we didn't go to the hotel but spent two wonderful days on FrauenInsel. Believe it or not we even got in line at the wrong boat dock and ended up back in Prien instead of where our car was parked in Gstadt.  Had to laugh at myself for that bonehead mistake. Turned out to be worth it though; great tour of lake and conversation with locals. 


Back to your question though:  what to do as a tourist? Herrenenchiemsee, FrauenInsel is a must, drive all the way around the lake a few times, hike, bike, sail, Heimatabend, relax, drink beer. Hochfelln, Kampenwand,  Winklmoos, Schleching, .... it's all fabulous. Sonja Lindner lives in Unterwoessen and does corporate events all over Chiemgau.  In her spare time she takes private families or groups on hikes or tours of area.... we hiked the SmugglerWeg from Schleching to Klobenstein .. just over the border.  Also hiked up to the little church on the hill above Unterwoessen...  I could stay there for months and not catch up on things to do.  We just missed the historic car show in B'gaden and the Harley ride in Winklmoos.  Becky  (sind sie heiss?)

I just discovered the AFRCski.com site today as I was looking for Motchescobi, Terry Van Valkenberg from Seattle who worked at Chiemsee(Army) when I did summer of 1972 when Olympics were in Munich. I was a Univ of Md munich girl, age 19 then,,,,and remember sylvia and have taken the other names mentioned, Cindy Winkler rings a bell,,,,and asked another friend of mine if he might know where they are today.


I also worked there summer of 1974I live in Germany again, right outside of Munich. I pass Chiemsee now andthen on my travels and its really sad to see that its just empty and going to waste now. also b'garten is gone as mentioned all over the site butGarmisch is still around.


anyway, its Motches I am looking for and he must be mentioned on the sitesomewhere as I googled that in and up came the AFRC site but I cant findhis name anywhere else on the site!


I found an old photo of me by the woman statue at Chiemsee Lake Hotel insummer 1972 and may scan it in and submit it but no one would recognize me because I am now 53!! I wish I could do a then and now but you cant get on the grounds of the hotel since there are guards,,,,I think I might have =


one of my daughter at age 10 there, now she is 19!! the same age as I waswhen I worked there,,,,


I still run into people from McGraw kaserne and my old U of M days. also Dave Oakland's name mentioned - he married a friend of mine about years ago and this year they have both retired from the civil service down =


there in Garmisch,,,

I was there in 1993 and I still remember the Cappucino from this little restaurant up the street from the bahnhof.  It was the BEST coffee I ever had in Europe or anywhere else.  I think I'd get a bike and ride around the lake, or just in and out of the nearby villages.
