WOW! We do weep. But ask yourself, Self, how few of us are there that knew what we had and took advantage of it? We saved every penny and spent it on living in Europe. If you think about it most GI's saved every penny so they could go home on leave to see the girl who had left them! The rest of them spent that penny at the local gasthouse. We here are the lucky ones. That is why we are here. It does not matter what decade you served in (or came over to work in). You were a cut above the rest. Do not weep for we are fondley remembered. We all have German friends that we can send our children to so that thay also can have the important experiance of living, exploring, loving, learning and of course partying in a far off country. We have won and we have set an example of how to win.We have left something for Eroupe to think about. Are you not driving a German car? It is time for us to move on. Come on, I think what you are weeping for is your lost youth! You can go back, it just costs more. You know if you drive the back roads you will find a zimmer frei and some good food. I think I'll go out and fire up the M3 and take a drive up to Big Bear and go skiing. Want to come? No weeping here, Craig. PARTY ON!!!!!!!

Rhine Main will forever be on my mind.... and now the Germans can get their eager greedy hands on it.... I remember R/M when I flew in there as a kid in 1956 while my dad was stationed at Spangdalem... we flew out in 1960. I came back in 1972 and noticed the hotel and landing area had changed. I was then stationed at neaby Hoerst, Germany but drove back by, especially on my weekend trips down from B'gaden. Every time I would drive by I thought about how we (my sister and I) played as kids on the elevator while waiting for our flight while housed at that hotel. In Jan 1974 I flew out of there to go home.

In 1975 I came back as a civilian with Steve Stahl and we stopped by on a short hop driving from Amsterdam to Berchtesgaden while on the Autobahn nearby. In 1980-85 I would stop by often as a reservist on my way home back to the states for duty or whatever.

1991 I few out of R/M on my way to a war, in the Desert, and in May 1992 I came back though there only to have to take a bus downtown in my DSU's to Frankfurt to catch a speedy train home to Berchtesgaden.

While working in Ansbach as a civilian I would drive by occassionally. And in 1995 on my way to Frankfurt Airport after deciding to move home to the States, I thought I'd give it one last look overs.

Little did I know after 14 months of  being stationed in Iraq that on my final trip home last June, I would stop off there for a pit stop to refuel the plain that took us to Philly.

I know that when we finally give it back - those walls will hold so many memories... and when the Germans tear down the walls and the other places that were build by American Dollars, to keep Germany free, I hope someone realizes that it all made good sense.

Auf Wiedersehen Rhine Main...Du hast uns gut getan...Danke und Servus--

After 60 years Rhein Main AFB will close this FY.

Like loosing another old friend.  The “Gateway to Europe will close forever during the summer and fall of 2005.

You can read about it in their web-site:  https://wwwmil.ramstein.af.mil/469abg/info/gateway.htm

If any of you are retirees of the military, dependents or on active duty and plan to visit Europe this summer, and plan to spend your last night before flying out of Frankfurt to CONUS, this just might be your last chance to stay at the Gateway Gardens.

The web-site for the Gateway Gardens is http://www-p.afsv.af.mil/LD/VT_RHEINMAIN.htm.

Our time has come to pass.  In the years ahead there will be little left for anyone to remember the US Military in Europe.  Our family members (grandchildren and their children) will travel in Europe and maybe, just maybe, take a side trip to where their grandparents once lived, worked, loved and served.  There might be something there that will show that “we once were there”.   Of any and all that once was and what has been torn down and replaced with new I know the two aircraft will remain as a consistant reminder just off the Frankfurt-Darmstadt Autobahn next to the Frankfurt International Airport.

We came, we saw, and now we weep.
