Received a letter from Dorian Welch that passed on the following letter:


 


I found a medallion in an antique shop in Western NY. A jpeg photo is attached. I assume it is a III infantry ski instructor badge from Ski-Top in Berchtesgaden but this is supposition. Do you have any insight into this pin and any history?

       This badge, I would guess, is about the size of a quarter.  On the top it says, BERCHTESGADEN.  Across the middle are a set of skiis and on them it says, SKI SCHOOL SKY-TOP.  The bottom of the circle are some leaves.  Between the top and middle section is a gold curved wedge with “III“ inscribed.


 


Does anyone have any knowledge of the period of time this pin was issued?


 


I would have attached a copy of this, but it is in jpg format.  I will send it on to Mark and maybe he can load it into the Photo Gallery section for everyone to see.

Here is a photo copy of the badge.  Someone out there must remember this badge.  I would guess it was issued in the 1946 - 1950 time period.  The “III“ might represent the 3rd year.  (Only a guess).

Hay guys!! Just got back from the reunion at Snow
Basin. My son and I had a great time. About the Badge. If my old mind remembers that is a third place badge for the end of ski week race. I was in Bgdn from 64-65,65-66 and 66-67. I have somewhere a
few of those badges. Of course all mine are all 1st
place! Yah Right!! Some of us were used as instructors at times. Guests and school kids would
come down for ski weeks. At the end of the week they
would have a race to see who improved the most. So,
there you go! You all ought to come to a reunion.
at least once. Lots of great people. If you like Badges you should see the ones that Kit Haskell
designed for us! And of course you would get to
meet a really cool guy Uncle Baz!! I hope that helps, bye, Craig.
