This saturday on the 23rd I'm having the 30th Anniversary of my 21st Birthday.
For the 15th year I'll be in Seattle but in April of 1981 we hada little party in Berchtesgaden that combineded about four of us into one Birthday Party at Strub Kaserne.
It was a beautiful Bavarian day. There wasn't much work wise just a little spring skiing by that time that year. We started with a BBQ outside and the party moved inside as the day faded and would eventualy end up at the Strub Disco after a brief period in the Barracks.
It was one of the best years for snowfall and skiing since WWII and there was still a lot of snow even in Strub.
I remember there was a cook, an American, that got into a bit of a fight with somebody and he got bounced out.
And there was a an American that had a French girlfriend who worked at the Hof who I seem to think was the other person in the fight.
I told the guy that he had to leave and walked him out one door and for some reason I had to go down to the other stairway for some thing and here comes the guy that I had just walked out and thought he was going home to his girlfriend. Some how he had lost his coat between one door and the other outside the building.
I walked him outside again and went back up the stairs and had just gotten back to the Kitchen (and the BIER) when one of the girls told me there was a drunk that was a little out of control so I went to check it out and I find the same drunk American but now he has lost his outershirt and is down to his T-shirt.
I walked him to the door and that was the last i saw of him for that night.
I saw the guy a few days later and he had a huge cut along the bottom of his chin and I was told that he got it going home that night. He had arrived home dripping wet, seems that he had gone out and tried to climb the fence into the German side of Stub Kaserne and was chased out. As he walked down the road to the Hof rather then take the shuttle bus he had the idea that he would just cut across the valley and slide down the hill, that was when he ended up in the water. Amazingingly he made it up a steep snow embankment and to the Hof.
His girlfriend is gretted by a dripping wet boyfriend with a huge gash along his chin and dripping wet. She was understanably concerned and wanted to know what had happened.
She later told me that he had said "They did this too me! They did this to me!"
"Who did this?" she asked as she tried to get him out of the wet clothes and tend to his wound.
"I know thier names! I have all thier names.!" he kept telling her.
"Who did it, what was thier name?" She quizzed him.
"John..." he told her and struggled to remember the second name, "John....john..." He just couldn't get the last name>
"John who she asked wanting to find out out ho would beat the crap out of him and drop him in a mountain stream.
"John Wayne!" He declared and passed out.
