A couple of the Berchtedgaden crew from the '80s were from New Orleans; Ted Hassenger & Jay Dana. I think they are still living in Germany. Does anyone know if they still have family in NOLA and if they're OK? Evacuees are starting to arrive here in Dallas, and individuals are loading up U-hauls with water and other essentials and driving them down to Baton Rouge. Bob

Kevin, you are thinking of Kem Nitcher. He was a desk clerk and part time Disco DJ for years through the 1980's. Big Mick Jagger fan. He had been living in Little Rock last I heard....I think his father moved away from NO years ago. Anyway, Kem had done all this research on the Hotel General Walker and had quite a collection of photos from the Hitler era that he found in the National Archives in DC. His intent was to write a book on the history of the place. My thoughts and prayers go to all that were and continued to be affected by Katrina. Laura Collier

Wow! Absolutely correct! Thank you, Laura. I'd been thinking his name was Jim but yet I knew that wasn't correct. I'm heading through Little Rock in 3 weeks so I may try to ring him up. Thanks so much for your update.

Hope the folks in the Big Easy can recover from this disaster - and those in charge learn from their mistakes. We feel for you up here in the not-so-frozen North. An old friend (maiden name Carol Thistle) from the Green Arrow (Abrams) Hotel - GAP- 1972. was working, last I heard several years ago, at the zoo as a publicist - does anyone know if she was still there and if she's okay? Chris A (from Canada eh.)

Has anyone heard from Doris Howard? She lives in New Orleans, which is now floating away. How about other AFRC'ers living in the southern states... everyone accounted for ?

Hello Becky thank you so much for your concern - this is doris. We ( little Max and me and my dogs and cats ) just arrived in Massachus. after a grueling drive. Max's grandmother lives up here, only family we have here in the states. It is so devastating what has happened and what is still happening. We just took the bare minimum ( enough cloth for 3 days, nothing else ) and got out in time. We are struggling and the road ahead does not look any easier. But we are safe, especially Maximilian, and that is worth more than anything. Once in a while I will have access to a computer, and I will try to stay in touch. doris

Hi Doris! Thank God you are safe!!! I was also very worried about you! Better come back to "Good Old Germany", huh? Please let us know if there is anything we can do to help! I spoke to Ted Hassinger, who lives in Karlstein by Bad Reichenhall. His family is safe but his parents lost their home. God bless you and keep you safe. Love Barbara

I remember a front desk clerk in B'Gaden/Walker whose 1st name I don't recall, but last name was Nitsche (or something similar). Caucasian guy, maybe 5'7”-8”-ish, glasses. Nice guy...he took me and my then girlfriend/now ex-wife Kathy Ireland into the tunnels below. Anyhow, he was from NawLins. Anyone know of whom I am speaking? I'm heading to Chicago for a 40th HS graduation /reunion in 2 weeks and had planned to go to Biloxi, MS, to see & stay at our sister property, Beau Rivage, after the Chicago event (I work for MGM Mirage in Vegas). Had a night reserved in NO in the French Quarter to see/hear Blues. Needless to say I've had to reroute. I've never had the chance to get to NO, have always wanted to, but now I'm afraid I won't ever see it in its true glory. It's a shame that the City and the people are having to endure this. I hope the Gulf Coast and its residents will be able to recover.

Lately, I've been in touch with Doris and asked if she would mind if I posted an appeal for help on the AFRC message board. Doris did not ask me for anything, but frankly, I would rather send money to someone I know who was displaced by the hurricane rather than an anonymous check. If any of you feel the same way, please send me an email (sirrab@msn.com) and I'll give you Doris's temporary address. Her house was in one of the hardest hit areas of New Orleans and she doesn't know what, if anything, is left. Thanks and why don't we pull together for one of our own? Gail Haberland
