Hey Geoff, Girlfriends and wasted youth in Garmisch - what better way to spend a TDY tour while in the military! That NCO ran the permanent troops stationed there and the guys & girls that came to try out for one thing or another. I just remember he used to ride us pretty hard in training. I just found out thru another friend that Keith still lives in GAP. When I get his address, I'll mention your sister. I live just outside of SF so if I ever get up to the city, I'll look up the Horseshoe Tavern and stop by. As far as free time in GAP - I hardly had any. I worked 6 or 7 days a week but no complaints back then. It was better than fixing helicopters in the snow of Mannheim. We had Tennis Week where we gave lessons and held class tournaments every week. Frank and I usually taught together - he was a blast to work with. After the class we had private lessons. 10 to 12 hour days was the norm. We had enough energy back then to take the students out on the town - probably every night or close to it as I recall. I did manage to see ELO one time but I think that was just before coming to Garmisch. Bis Spader......Pete

Hello Geoff, Thanks for the response. I seem to recall your last name but can't match a face to it. I got a European out too and worked in the Campground. Do you remember the name of that E6 or E7 in charge of the troops? I remember we called him Sgt Willie but I can't remember his last name. How about a guy called Penthouse Bob - lived in a converted delivery truck at the campground? Finding this web-site has brought a lot of old memories -too bad I can't put names to all the faces I remember. Yeah, Frank was quite a character wasn't he? I taught tennis with him for 3 summers and he was a lot of fun to work with. I only did Ski Patrol in the early part of the winter - before the new group came in to try out. When the snow came, I taught tennis at the indoor courts. Whenever they needed someone I'd get the call - usually to follow a Ski School class - but it was all great. Keith Eades is a good buddy of mine. I used to call him the King's Twin. We used to have lunch all the time with the workers in the casern lunch room - 3 or 4 marks for a delicious lunch - couldn't beat it. Bis Spader Pete

About Sgt Charles, before he left GAP, I bought his old white Ford Fairlane with the stick on the column. The driver's side door came off, we jammed it back on and used the window to exit--for sport, of course. I think the exhaust pipe was wired on with a guitar string. I apologize to anyone I drove around while learning to drive.

Hey there Geoff, not sure if we remember each other, but I taught in GAP the winter of 1978-79. I sure remember Frieda, Willi and Frank, not to mention Bert Hilgers, Molly, Caroline, Dave Steffes, Monika, Randy, Hubert, Herbert, and many more. My name is Kevin Teichroeb. I'm in Vancouver now, where I can work by day and drive 5 minutes to ski by night on Grouse Mountain or any of the North Shore peaks bordering the city. It would be great to catch up and see where our paths crossed in Garmisch. Tchus.

Hi Pete. No, you must be remembering one of my teammates. If memory serves me, you may be thinking of Nick Thorn. One of the team members did want to fly, and I think it was him.

Hi Guys....this is Pete. I used to teach tennis with this guy. His name is Bill Adams and he was from British Ghana. Lost touch with him years ago. He was teaching tennis in Italy back in 1984 when I last ran into him in Garmisch.

Hello, I came across this site while looking for pictures of Garmisch and the surrounding mountains for my son. Reading the various emails brought back fond memories of my time in Garmisch. I was lucky enough to have heard about the AFRC program while stationed in Mannheim. I sent in the required paperwork, was released on TDY and arrived in Garmisch in the Spring of 1978. I ended up teaching tennis in the Tennis Week program they had then. At the end of the Summer, they needed someone to ski early Ski Patrol and I was tapped for that duty too. No complaints here. They moved me around quite a bit so I also rented bikes, ice skates and ski gear from time to time. I was sad to read here that John Dove passed away. I knew him quite well. He taught me to mount ski bindings in the Winter and how to string tennis racquets in the Summer. I worked with him in that little downstairs room on and off for 2 or 3 yrs. Don't remember too many names of the guys and girls I worked with. The German tennis staff....Hans, Freida and Willie, Frank. On the American side, Bill Adams and Connie (whose last name I can't remember) Then there were some long-term GAP'ers Paul Dutro, Keith Eades, Barb Bowman are names that come to mind. Well, that's it for now. Anyone who remembers me is welcome to drop a line. Thanks Pete

Geoff, Who can forget Willie Evans. I have several pictures of him. I was the Rec Director for GAP and Willie worked for me. I lived 'cross the river with my wife Donna. She was the Rec Director for the community and organized several climbs to the Zugspitze. What wonderful memories. Joe Garves

Geoff--- Do you remember me? I remember you! I was roomates with Suzie Norman and was stationed permanent party as the mail clerk and clerk in the adjutant's office. I have red hair and used to be wild... but weren't we all? I remember when you came home from state side leave summer of '77 with the soundtrack (on vinyl no less) of Star Wars! You were trying to explain the movie to us. You used to visit us a lot. Remember Judge Dramis? He kayaked with Suzie a lot. I barely remember Cliff. I hope you get this since it was posted so long ago. I'm trying to locate Suzie. We lost touch when my son was little. He's 24 now and in the Navy! I also lost touch with Hero Charles. I know he was really sad after retiring. Drop me a line. Christine Windsor

Hey Geoff, Back in '84 my wife and I went on our honeymoon and spent some time in GAP. I had forgotten about the Hallenbad schedule. We ended up going on Nude Night. Nuff said. Pete

Sgt. Evans, AKA Black Lassie (like from the song, the name just somehow stuck) to the race teamers, now there was a guy who seemed totally out of his element in Garmisch. Joe Garves, good to see you drop in here. Hope life has been good to you since Garmisch. After 27 years I happened by chance to cross paths with John Swift (USARUER Race Team Coach) this past February in Steamboat at the NASTAR National Championships. He was there racing, I was there coaching. We spent an evening sharing drinks and memories of a special time in both our lives, and yours was one of the names that came up. Rick Schnellmann, Race Team, 77-79
