“Sans Peur” — Without Fear

William Donald Sutherland III — husband, father, grandfather, veteran, and a man who lived fully and fearlessly — passed away peacefully on May 30, 2026, in Purcellville, Virginia, surrounded by the family he loved above all else. He was 77 years old. Born on December 8, 1948, in Berea, Ohio, Bill lived a life worthy of the Sutherland Clan motto he cherished: Sans Peur — Without Fear.

Bill’s greatest adventure began in Germany, where his military service took him and where fate had something far more important in store. It was there that he met Erika, the woman who would become his wife and his partner in everything. They married on July 23, 1976, and built a life together in Germany — raising four children, Stefanie, Katy, Max, and Will, all of whom grew up bilingual, equally at home in English and German. Germany wasn’t just a posting; it was a formative world for the entire Sutherland family, and Bill’s love for the country, its culture, and its people never left him.

The family returned to the United States in 1994 and settled in Virginia in 1998, where Bill and Erika put down roots and watched their family grow. He was a proud veteran who treasured his years of military service — not just for the duty and discipline it demanded, but for the rich, wide life it gave him.

Those who knew Bill knew a man of many passions. He was a gifted writer with a storyteller’s instinct and a photographer’s eye — always seeing something worth capturing, always finding the right words. In the kitchen, he cooked with the same care and generosity he brought to everything he did. On the slopes, he skied with the fearless joy that defined him. He traveled whenever he could, collecting experiences with the enthusiasm of someone who understood that the world is too large and too beautiful to stay in one place.

Bill had a deep love for family history and spent countless hours tracing the Sutherland lineage, connecting generations and preserving the stories that might otherwise have been lost. He was immensely proud of his Scottish heritage and carried the clan motto — Sans Peur — not as an abstraction, but as a living principle. When he was diagnosed with a brain tumor in December 2025, he faced that challenge the same way he faced everything else: without fear, with grace, and with his family close.

He is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 50 years, Erika G. Sutherland; his four children, Stefanie Rudolph, Katy Donovan, Max Sutherland, and Will Sutherland; and his seven grandchildren, Lily, Emma, Logan, Liam, Theo, Vivian, and Heidi — each of whom carries a piece of him forward.

Bill Sutherland was the kind of man who made every room warmer, every table better, and every adventure worth having. He leaves behind a family that adored him, a legacy that will endure, and a lesson in how to live: fully, gratefully, and without fear.
